The April Challenge!

I love setting little short term goals that encourage me to try something new. Some examples of small challenges I’ve tried are… going to the gym three times one week, no sugar for a whole day, no meat for 30 days, practice the piano one hour a day for a week, etc.

Completing these small goals sometimes gets the ball rolling on big life changes with long term benefits. I’ve been thinking about sharing these challenges in the hopes of sharing motivation and support with others.

So… with that I bring you the April Challenge – Second Hand Spring!

Let me start off by saying that I am a bit of a compulsive shopper. While I generally hunt down good bargains and keep an eye out for discounts, I still tend to over-do it. I enjoy looking in stores for trends  and ideas… and often come home with items I didn’t plan on buying.

The change of the season is upon us, as is the temptation to freshen up my warm-weather wardrobe. I thought this would be a good time to challenge myself to NOT splurge on anything unnecessary for an entire month!

For the first part of the April Challenge, I will only be permitted to shop in the following stores:

  1. Grocery Stores
  2. Thrift stores – Salvation Army/ GoodWill
  3. That’s it!

I’m hoping to not only gain some (much needed) shopping restraint, but to also get more creative with the items I already own. The additional perks of second-hand shopping of course are saving money, sponsoring charitable organizations such as the Salvation Army/ GoodWill and having less of a negative impact on the environment.

The second part of the challenge requires that I donate an item from my home for every (thrift store) item purchased.

I’ll be chronicling my progress as well as my temptations along the way. Maybe I’ll make a wishlist of items I did not buy. My reward for completing the challenge is that I’m going to transfer the money I saved directly into my long-term savings account.
